Learner goals and capabilities

Looking to elevate your organization, and bring it to the next level? Bring on students from the College of Wooster to be your student-consultants, in a project-based experience. Students will work on one main project over the course of the semester, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools.

Students in this program/course will learn the foundations of information visualization and sharpen their skills in communicating using data, both individually and as part of a team. Students will use Tableau software to develop both static and interactive data visualizations and dashboards of data obtained from existing sources. Effective storytelling and analysis of visualizations, data ethics, and reproducibility will be discussed in this course.

Project Examples

Students in groups of 3 will work with your company to identify your data visualization needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research and analysis/visualization of your data.

Project activities that students can complete may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Clean and prepare a company's data set for the summarization and visualization process.
  • Identify and describe numerical and visual methods and techniques best for communicating a company's data set.
  • Explain, orally and in writing, what a data visualization is showing for a given data set.
  • Produce visualizations (univariate, multivariate, interactive, and animated plots and maps), appropriate for different data types and analysis goals, using technology (Tableau).
  • Provide an explanation of why the message portrayed in a visualization might be correct, but also identify possible sources of bias, problems with the analysis or assumptions behind the visualization for a company's data set.
  • Conduct reproducible data analysis using data provided by a company.
  • Identify the source(s) of a data set and discuss the ethical implications of the data collection, dissemination, and analysis.
